Performer and visual artist for more than 20 years, Nicolas Aca has produced several works for the community, including sculpted portraits of famous personalities.
His most recent wooden artwork, a portrait of Vice President Sara Duterte, was recently presented to the nation’s second-highest ranking official.
In an interview on Thursday, Aca said his standard size for such woodwork would be around 2x24x16 inches and typically cost PHP20,000 in a two-week commissioned job.
“Its materials come from ‘tugas’ (molave wood); there are a lot of suppliers here in CDO (Cagayan de Oro),” he said.
However, in the last commissioned work, Misamis Oriental 2nd District Representative Yevgeny Vincente Emano provided a wooden material measuring approximately four feet.
Aca said such a dimension usually costs between PHP 40,000 and 50,000 in labor.
After graduating from college in 1995, the local artist continued his career in arts and crafts and began doing street art in the early 2000s.
Among its most notable performances is the commemoration of the victims of tropical storm “Sendong” in 2011, who died during the city’s flash flood.
He also engaged the public during election season with a call not to sell their votes.
During last month’s “Higalaay” festival here, Aca also created the heads and tails of the mythical Oro fish “Kugtong” for the dragon boat race.
In 2021, Aca was appointed president of the city’s Historical and Cultural Commission and trained his gaze on the rehabilitation of the “Museo de Oro” and the promotion of local history and culture in schools.
Earlier this month, Emano introduced the art of carpentry to Duterte’s office during a courtesy visit, along with Misamis Oriental 1st District Representative Christian Unabia and City 1st District Representative , Lordan Suan.
Emano hopes the art of carpentry will foster good relations between the Misamisnons and the vice president’s office.
“Portraits are the most intimate, endearing and enduring photographs. Because the image will survive the subject,” Emano said in a recent statement. (NAP)
