Galen was born March 31, 1975 to Gary Eugene and Bonnie June (Huber) Mitchell. He spent most of his school career in the $ 429 school district in Troy, KS, where he graduated in 1993. Galen continued his education at Cloud County Community College from 1993 to 1995, then went to Kansas State University where he graduated in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in animal science.
Galen met his true soul mate in Kansas State. He married Shawna Hollinger on June 13, 1998. Together they built a strong family and life. Galen and Shawna lived in many places that shaped him into who he was, but the most notable were Lyon, KS; Ulysses, KS; Troy, KS; and O’Neill.
Galen had many jobs but found his passion in feeding cattle. He worked at McPherson County Feeders, Grant County Feeders, Premium Feeders and found his forever home in Herd Co.
Galen liked to work with his hands to build things. He has been a welder all his life and started woodworking about three years ago. Galen was as stubborn as they were and didn’t know a stranger. He could strike up a conversation and make a new friend anywhere.
Galen became a father in February 2005 when he and Shawna gave birth to their first daughter Sarah. In October 2008, Galen was fortunate enough to have another daughter, Grace. He was a devoted husband and father who truly loved his family. He had a strong faith that began many years ago with his grandmother Mitchell.
Galen was a member of Faith Community Church in O’Neill.
Galen was thrown by a curve ball in December 2019 when diagnosed with cancer. He fed the doctors, the wait, and the treatments with tremendous courage and strength. Galen lost her battle with colon cancer on Sunday, October 24, 2021 with Shawna, Sarah and Grace by her side. He knew he was well loved and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Galen is survived by his wife Shawna of O’Neill for 23 years; two daughters Sarah and Grace Mitchell, both of O’Neill; his parents Gary and Bonnie Mitchell of Troy, KS; in-laws Jim and Mary Hollinger of Lyon, KS; one sister Nancy Gabbert of Weston, MO; one brother-in-law Bryan (Leanne) Hollinger of Lyon, KS; a nephew Craig Gabbert of Weston, MO; three nieces Bailey Gabbert of Platte City, MO, Aubrey (Josh) Hall of McPherson, KS, and Bailey Hollinger of McPherson, KS; and many dear uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
