What does it take to achieve the much-vaunted “Superhost” status on Airbnb? And what steps would someone take to get the highest possible rating from a guest in their home? It was the subject of a skit this week Saturday Night Live, who found Cecily Strong and Rami Malek playing a couple willing to do anything to impress the couple (Mikey Day and Melissa Villaseñor) who booked a stay in their cabin.
How does this translate? Some choices of very distinctive works of art, on the one hand. And very exaggerated social media monitoring, for another. Malek’s ability to play characters that were a bit too intense was on display for much of the episode – and was particularly noticeable here. And Strong is no stranger to playing very baffling intensity for maximum comedic value, a talent also on display here.
The sketch has a few moments that don’t quite land, including a first woodworking joke that falls flat. But another joke – about Malek’s character’s first name – works much better by adding to the overall unsettling vibe of the sketch. And for more scenes of Malek embracing a chaotic comedic presence, his interaction with the Please Don’t Destroy guys has that in abundance.
