Skil 20V Cordless Pole Saw Makes Tree Maintenance More Convenient
Skil has a 20V cordless pole saw we got our hands on, and there’s a lot to like about the design. First of all, it’s part of the PWRCore 20 range which includes 20V and 40V lawn care (with two 20V batteries) and Skil’s highest performing cordless power tools.
The Skil 20V Cordless Pole Saw comes with three main parts in the box: the handle section, the motor section and an extension cord. With the three pieces together you have a 10 foot pole saw. For most people, this is an effective cutting height of 14 to 15 feet. The good thing is you can pull the extension out and have a 6.5ft pole saw to reach the lower branches.
Putting the parts together is easy. Simply turn the shaft until it aligns and slides into position, then slide the threaded connector against it and tighten it.
You will need to install the bar and chain. It’s also easy with Skil’s tool-less bar and chain access. Turn the lock knob until the cover can come off, set the bar in place, and route the chain around the drive sprocket and through the bar guides. If you are not 100% sure about the direction of the chain, there is a graphic right next to the cover to help you match it.
Finally, put the cover back on and re-tighten the locking knob.
If you notice the chain is loose at any point, loosen this lock knob one turn, turn the tension sleeve surrounding the knob to increase chain tension, and re-tighten the knob.

The bar measures 8 inches, which is enough to cover most of the limbs you would want to do from the ground. Even though it’s a bit smaller than professional 10-inch pole saws, Skil’s articulated head really helps you work around large branches. By pressing both buttons at the pivot point, you have a total of 135 ° of movement. This includes a point 90 ° to the post and fantastic for getting over the top of a branch to cut down.
If a branch you cut does not fall, there is a plastic hook under the saw to encourage it to give in to gravity.
The chain is a 0.043 inch, 3/8 inch pitch gauge that is easy to grip when you need a replacement. Skil’s PWRCore 20 engine pulls it at 8 meters per second (1575 fpm).
When it comes to controlling the fit, we really like Skil’s grip design. The trigger extends the full length of the handle, making it convenient to pull from any gripping position. The trigger safety is a simple push button that you can press with your thumb whether you are right or left handed.
Keeping the chain oiled is no problem. Just take a look at the translucent oil reservoir to make sure it’s filled before you start cutting and the auto oiler does the rest.
Including the guide bar and chain, the tool weighs 8.9 pounds and its balance is very advanced, as you would expect from any pole saw. Skil includes a shoulder strap to help you manage the weight.
As we have seen with several other lawn care tools in the PWRCore 20 line, Skil includes its easy storage rack with this tool. In fact, they include two with a support to maintain the extension.
